Get Schooled - Helping Kids in Uganda Succeed

Helping Kids in Uganda 'Get Schooled'

Get Schooled #50for50Get Schooled started as a project to celebrate my 50th birthday and turned into the trip of a lifetime, a (hopefully) sustainable school and many changed lives, including mine.

It took almost two years of planning and after raising over $40,000, we were able to send 54 students to school for 2019. We were also grateful to have a completely safe and life-changing bike ride around the country of Uganda in June and July 2019, cycling just over 2200 diverse kilometres over the span of 50 beautiful days (30 days in the saddle). We met countless Ugandans who embraced us, supported us, fed us, encouraged us and waved at us, sometimes from great distances. We couldn’t have made it without them! We blogged each day’s events and you can read about the trip HERE. It was certainly an incredible time and so much happened each and every day!

A lot has happened in the last year since we have been home. Out of the 54 students who were originally sponsored, 12 of them have been able to continue their education in 2020 (although COVID-19 has affected the methods). And in hopes to do something more sustainable and long-lasting, we jumped at the opportunity to purchase an actual school right in the district where Kassanda Children’s Aid works and with the help of some generous donors, we bought the land and the school and gave it to Kassanda Children’s Aid to manage and use to reach the most vulnerable of children. Please hope over to the Kassanda Seed School to read more about what is happening there!

Our focus has now shifted to getting sponsorships for the teachers and students of this little vulnerable village school. You can read the profiles of the most vulnerable students on our Meet the Children page and if you are interested in sponsoring a student, please reach out to us. We would be more than happy to help get that set up! It costs about $400 USD or $520 CAD to pay for a full year of education and that includes tuition fees, food, medical treatment and a school uniform. All donations over $15 are tax deductible for both the US and Canada.
